Prague (Czech: Praha) is the capital of the Czech Republic, located practically in the center of the country over the Vltava river. Prague is home to almost 1.3 million inhabitants, making it undeniably the largest concentration of Czech population.

Today's Prague was founded in 1784 with the merger of five previously independent, but related organisms, which dates back to the medieval Old Town, New Town, Josefov, Mala Strana and Prague Castle - the seat of Czech kings. Since 1992, the historic center of town is UNESCO World Heritage List. Because of the wealth of attractions, is one of the most visited cities in Europe.

History

Legend has it that long time ago had a vision of Princess Libusza emergence of a big city where the headquarters will be the mighty of this country. Prophecy is verified, because the castle was built, which was called Prague. Moat surrounded him, and secured against the incursions of enemies.

Recorded by archaeologists, the first traces of settlement date back to the sixth century. Of course, of ancient settlers were none other than the Slavs. From 995 years Prague has become the official seat of the Czech principality, which in the eleventh century, became the kingdom. Intensive development of Prague took place during the reign of Charles IV, in whose honor the bridge was built (in place of the destroyed bridge, Judith). Charles IV was the founder of the first university in Central Europe.

In the year 1547 took place an uprising against Ferdinand I state that after the fall limited the further development of the city. Fortunately, the crisis did not last long, because the Emperor Rudolf II of Prague made its headquarters, which in turn has led to intensive development of science and culture.

In 1784, the city Hradčan Prague, Mala Strana, Nové Město Staré Město and have been combined, resulting in the Royal Capital City of Prague.

The late nineteenth and early twentieth century was extremely productive for Prague, since at that time there was a flourishing industry, and far-reaching technological advances (electric tram). The outbreak of World War I, once again limited the development of the city, and in 1918 in Prague, the Czechoslovak Republic was proclaimed. In turn, World War II did not cause serious damage to the city, but during the war, shut down all universities, powywożono Jewish population to concentration camps, even changed the traffic on the right. The liberation of Prague took place in May 1945 ...

Unfortunately, the end of World War II did not mean for the Prague people desired peace, because in 1968 the city was occupied by allied troops of the Soviet Union, which contributed to the emergence of Prague as the seat of the Czechoslovak Socialist Republic and the Federal Government and the Czech Republic. Twenty years later, in 1988 among Prague people started to intensify anti-communist sentiment that led to numerous and violent demonstrations, resulting in stepped to the police and security services ...

Culture and customs

Spending a weekend in Prague, we can not visit as much as 10% of Prague's historical monuments, architecture, and other places of interest. Nevertheless, if we want to dedicate this beautiful city, although a week, we necessarily see:
